Beauty School: The Benefits of Hair Oiling

The Tiktok ‘Clean Girl’ movement has bought hair oil and sleek, shiny hair into our social feeds. While this trend has only recently risen in popularity, the practice of Hair Oiling is nothing new.

You may have heard of many hair oil products, from Rosemary Hair Oil and Gisou Hair Oil to Kérastase Hair Oil. But what’s so special about them?

Hair Oil is one of the oldest beauty traditions that has lasted from ancient civilizations to  modern households. A significant sect of this practice comes from Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine originating from India, that emphasises the importance of oiling the hair and scalp to maintain overall hair health.

Yet many clients will be new to hair oiling and won’t know where to start.

Regular oiling does a lot of good protecting hair from environmental and styling damage. It may also increase moisture, lustre, and shine, and helps to prevent hair loss and stimulate growth. It can also help to repair dry and heat damaged hair.

If your clients struggle with dry, dull, frizzy or thin hair, consider incorporating hair oiling into their beauty regime.

How to Use Hair Oil

It is recommended to only oil your hair 1-2 times a week. Using hair oil too often can cause breakage.

  1. Apply oil on your scalp and massage with fingertips using a circular motion.
  2. Apply the oil left on your palms to your hair.
  3. Cover with a towel or shower cap and leave on overnight.
  4. The next day, shampoo hair while dry. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Condition as normal. You can also use coconut oil as a conditioner.

Which Hair Oil Should I Use?

Hair Oiling is best for dry, heat damaged hair. Clients with naturally oily hair can still use hair oil on the ends of their hair, but should avoid applying to the scalp.

Here’s our guide on the most popular hair oils, and which you can recommend to your clients.
